EXCLUSIVE: Delays to George Square Revamp Spark Fears of Another 'Sauchiehall Street Shambles'
Six-month setback raises concerns among residents and businesses over the project’s completion before the Commonwealth Games in 2026
By Gary Fanning
Plans to revamp George Square have been delayed by almost six months, raising concerns among residents and businesses that the project may not be finished before the Commonwealth Games in August 2026.
The £115 million Avenues project, part of a city-wide transformation, was expected to begin work in January but has been pushed back due to the ongoing process of selecting a contractor.
The Splash understands new start date for the construction work could be set for May 20, several months later than initially planned.
The delay has prompted fears of a repeat of the problems faced by the Sauchiehall Street Avenue’s project, which has faced significant disruptions. The city centre street was previously renowned for shopping and entertainment but has suffered a major decline in footfall. Delays have plagued the £6m project, largely due to complications with underground utilities.
