The Chris Mitchell Column: Rat Boy Joins the Fight for Carmyle’s Green Space
GMB union leader adopts quirky alter egos ‘Rat Boy’ and ‘Steven Seagull’ in bid to block housing development
EXCLUSIVE by Chris Mitchell, GMB Convenor Glasgow
We have a message to our good friends of Carmyle and we are fighting to save our greenspace.
I have a very special announcement but before that there is very serious side to this.
I have said it quite clearly before: once they start drilling the rats will come and will cause absolute carnage within Carmyle.
A rat epidemic, which is known as leptospirosis disease, we cannot have that within our community.
Once they start drilling and everything else, the rats have to go somewhere.
They are making the rats homeless and they have to nest and feed.
But now for the announcement – we have a very special guest coming. It is absolutely fantastic to introduce the one and only who help us in this campaign: Rat Boy – and he is going to bring a very special guest.
Rat Boy joins the fight:
Hello Sharon (Sharon Caddie, of the Stand Up For Carmyle group) my good friend, it is Rat Boy. I have been sent here by my comrade Chris Mitchell, from the GMB. Chris has been very vocal in protests and has a great result in 200 cleansing workers. Know what else Sharon. My friends and family phoned me who stay on the banks of the Clyde. They are going to get made homeless. The whole of this in greenbelt is going to be a construction site. I think it is deplorable. Know what happened Sharon, I could flit across the road into people’s houses and bins, and we will be there for years to come, and have one giant buffet. Let me tell you something, I am here to give you my support and that good man Chris Mitchell. As for a message to the council and the contractors, leave the poor greenspace alone and leave my home alone. Thank you very much Sharon. All the best from Rat Boy. Solidarity.
The campaign also unveiled a new banner: “Save Our Village – No Voice. No Choice. No More.”

Everybody is coming together to fight and demand more investment in Carmyle. But it should not come at the price by destroying our greenspace. Next Saturday, August 2, is our protest fund day from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Please support and all welcome. Thank you very much again and please keep signing the petition.
