The Annemarie Ward Column: The End of Woke, The Farce of the Far Right, and the Return of Common Sense
A summit of spin, not substance — where truth is sidelined for ideology.
EXCLUSIVE by Annemarie Ward, CEO of Faces & Voices of Recovery UK (FAVOR-UK)
In Glasgow this week, a small collection of politicians and public sector grandees gathered in what was billed as an ‘anti-far-right summit’.
One assumes they arrived by taxpayer-funded Tesla, clutching oat milk lattes and brimming with the usual pieties.
There, they solemnly discussed how to combat a menace so vanishingly rare in Scotland it could probably fit inside the upstairs lounge of a Wetherspoons.
The summit’s true purpose, of course, was not to tackle extremism but to stage-manage a moment of elite self-congratulation.
The attendees weren’t trying to defeat the far-right - they were trying to relocate it, ideally somewhere far away from their own policy failures.
Furious Locals Force U-Turn on Cycle Lane Plan: ‘This Will Finish Govan Off’
Don’t Disrupt Govan, Don’t Destroy Our Businesses — Community Leader’s Warning to City Planners
Exclusive by Gary Fanning
Govan residents and traders are up in arms over proposals to overhaul their roads with cycle lanes — branding the proposals “undemocratic”, “unwanted”, and “devastating for local business.”
More than 200 residents packed into the Pearce Institute on Govan Road on Tuesday night, furious at the six-week consultation process on the Active Travel Scheme — a proposal to overhaul traffic along Govan Road with new cycle lanes, narrower roads, and changes to parking and access.
The meeting, organised by Govan, Govan East, and Drumoyne Community Councils, revealed the depth of opposition, with many calling the consultation process rushed and out of touch with the realities of daily life in the area.
“It is not for us and it is not going to happen,” one speaker declared, drawing applause from the room.
EXCLUSIVE: ‘We’re only just getting started’- Campaigners dive back into fight to save Whitehill Pool
Residents Demand Action: 'We've Waited Too Long for Facility's Future'
EXCLUSIVE by Gary Fanning
Veteran campaigner Bill Stark fired the starting pistol on a new campaign to save Whitehill Pool, declaring: 'Campaign 2025 is just beginning. We’re only just getting started.'
Mr Stark, who led the successful 2019 campaign to save the pool from closure, addressed more than 100 passionate residents at a special meeting in Reidvale Neighbourhood Centre, Dennistoun, on Tuesday evening.
Hosted by Dennistoun Community Council, the meeting was held to demand answers — and action — over the closure of the pool, which has been shut since December 2023 due to dangerous RAAC (reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete) discovered in the building. The pool in Onslow Drive was closed for health and safety reasons.
Mr Stark, a former chairman of Whitehill Swimming Club, declared: “Campaign 2019 has gone. Campaign 2025 is just to begin.
EXCLUSIVE: Byres Road café owner slams cycle lane scheme - "They’ve screwed everything up"
Business leader criticises planners for disregarding locals and calls for council to reverse controversial road changes
EXCLUSIVE by Gary Fanning
A long-established Glasgow café owner has launched a scathing attack on recent changes to Byres Road, accusing planners of ignoring the needs of local businesses and residents.
Americo Verrecchia, pictured above left, whose family has run the University Café for four generations since it first opened in 1918, says recent redesigns of the popular West End thoroughfare have done more harm than good.
“They’ve never worked, stayed or lived here,” he said, referring to those behind the project. “They draw little pictures and think it looks pretty.
EXCLUSIVE: Summit Ends Without Agreement on Managing Celtic Fans' Title Celebration in May Amid Fears of a Repeat of Last Year’s Chaos
Further Discussions to Develop Long-Term Plans Including Local Residents and Fans' Perspectives
EXCLUSIVE by Gary Fanning
An unprecedented summit bringing together key figures from Scottish football, the Scottish Government, Glasgow City Council, police, representatives of Celtic and Rangers, and local residents’ leaders ended without a clear plan to manage the expected influx of thousands of Celtic fans celebrating their team’s Premiership title triumph next month.
The high-stakes Hampden Park meeting—led by local MSP Kaukab Stewart last Friday—ended without action over the last game of the season, sparking fears of a repeat of last year’s chaos at Glasgow Cross, where 25,000 fans took over the streets, with more than £100,000 in damages to historic sites and public infrastructure.
Local Community Councils said residents had been left terrified and the fans’ actions were widely condemned by Glasgow City Council, police and politicians.
